Modern Spiritualism was discovered by the Fox Sisters on March 31, 1848. They lived in a small cottage and communicated with Charles B. Rosna, the spirit of a peddler who was murdered in the cottage. Here is a nice little article about it. The cottage was in Hydesville, NY, which is now Newark, NY. I'm less than thrilled with the title of the article, as it makes Spiritualism sound ungodly, or grisly. But on the other hand, it is nicely written, and there is a picture of the foundation, which is the only remaining part of the original building.
